Honestly Lisa

♥Honestly Lisa is a Pu Pu Platter of my life. Once a week I will conduct(formal I know) interviews with everyone from family,, guru's, exboyfriends, childhood friends, thought leaders and maybe even Oprah in search of who I am and what I'm supposed to be. when I grow up. There is salty language, talk of sex , feelings, and spiritual stuff. So you may not want to listen in front of the kids or your coworkers. Love Bites are audio clips based on real conversations from my love life, featuring my friend Robbie Rist, who plays every man who has graced my path. Men Are People Too, where I interview a variety of men; comedians, actors, musicians, artists, writers, computer programmers, yoga guru's, to gain a sometimes hilarious and sometimes serious perspective on how men see love, sex and relationships from their side of the ship. Ladies, you will learn so much about men! Listen in and hear the truth. And sometimes I will just share random musings on life, love, fashion and food or anything else that strike my fancy. And that’s the magpie.

Shannon Whaley Traveling Wildwoman!

Women's business and marketing coach - works with passionate and driven service based entrepreneurs, taking side gigs and turning them into sustainable businesses.

Lisa gets sidetracked to begin with, forgets to eat and then buys a really expensive salad.

Has been doing this for a while, but has kind of changed and morphed all along.

Just broke up with 3 year boyfriend, and is moving to Italy. Longest relationship except cats, who are living with her mom.

She thinks a lot of people start coaching to live wherever they want.

Hannah Dixon (listen to the episode with Hanna here) Location independent.

Danielle LaPorte - amazing author on figuring out what you want to feel, to be the person you want to be.

Shannon's core desired feelings: ease, passion, freedom, adventure. (I use these when I'm making decisions, will they get me closer or father away from my mission?)

Intuitive feelings with excitement or trepidation "don't do this!"

"Now that I'm sober, I have more access to those feelings." - Shannon

"I have a feeling, I don't know how often I listen to my intuition" - Lisa

Met boyfriend long before they got together, she was a cocktail waitress in Seattle, he was a DD for his friends.

2013 - Left Seattle and moving to San Diego to be a hairstylist, but also had to be a waitress to support her growing hair business. But really didn't want to do the same thing she was doing in Seattle.

Was invited to Cayman Islands by boyfriend to visit, and moved there because she wanted to do something different. Her boyfriend was already sober, she knew she was done and needed a clean start.

"of course I was that girl and came home wasted" - Shannon

When did you discover that you could make money online?

The Pathfinder, Nicholas Lore

Started looking at what was possible for her, yoga teacher, coach... Coach!

Had gone to Tony Robbins events, and used to be a counselor and has a degree in psychology, and thought "That would be a perfect way to use my degree and help people" And I could help anyone anywhere in the world.

"Everything I wanted when I graduated from college, but didn't know how to access" - Shannon

Working with women in crisis, vs. making themselves better.

She's taken two coach trainings, Institute for life coach training, inner glow circle.

Becoming an assistant trainer so she can be a coach trainer.

Has a one-on-one clientele and a group class starting in April. Has a retreat coming up in Italy in June.

Who is coming to you? Coaches.

I've helped a man start a fishing charter business, "It transcends industries, but I prefer working with women and coaches."

Where do you start?

Work on getting legal first. (terms, disclaimers, permits, licences)

Work on money

"I'm beginning to wonder if I will ever figure it out" - Lisa

"We are all doing it over and over again, and it shows up in a different outfit every time"- Lisa

Profit First by Mike Michalowicz

Working with a money strategist coach - Carrie Fry Williams

You want two checking accounts.

All business money goes into business checking.

All personal money goes into personal checking.

two savings

one is profit / one is taxes

All business money goes in to business checking, and pay myself twice a month from there.

My first business basically shut down, so I've launched a new one! Now, 50% of what I make goes to me personally. - Shannon

"It's so common with entrepreneurs, they pay themselves last." - Shannon

I help women make their business sustainable. - Shannon

In the Cayman Islands, you need business partners. I didn't' know what I was doing, and they ended up pulling out because of that.

We have a gift, and our strong points aren't business related. This isn't natural for me.

I don't want to be like my dad, and I don''t want my daughter to have to take care of me. - Lisa

Shannon "Needed support because I felt lost"

There are so many horror stories about people handing their money over to someone and getting stolen from.

"I'd rather be in my zone, and hire this out" - Shannon

"I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be doing to make money" -Lisa

"It's my sugar daddy, it pays for me and the cat, and my 30 year old daughter-not really" -Lisa

I want to show women that it's okay to be human. I don't want to do stand up anymore, but I want to go speak, and inspire women through my comedy. I want to journey with them. That's how I want to make my money, plus it's location independent.

I know there are things that I'm supposed to be doing...

Visit Shannon's website, and sign up for the free gift! (opt in guide!) about how to thank clients for signing up, keep them warm, send them gifts, keep them coming back, give them actual valuable things so they look forward to your messages.

How would you work with me?

Read the Pathfinder. Know what it is you want to be doing.

I recently wrote a vision statement:

"I am bringing thousands of women laughter, community, and self acceptance though my comedy and self acceptance through Honestly Lisa."

I want them to know that I'm going on the journey with them. Audio/video, words, blogging, weekly newsletters and speaking.

Organizing my website, opt-ins, making sure people who've signed up for my mailing list are getting what they sign up for!

We're using a project management collaboration software called Asana. Great place to manage any project, get everyone organized in one space.

"Kind of like a refrigerator for your business." - Lisa

"When tasks start to fall off, I get the jitters." -Meghan

"It's like looking at an SRA test, or one with all the little dots in it." - Lisa

"It's as simple as a to-do list" - Meghan

"This not so much helps you, but if you want to hire other people" - Meghan

"Before you hire a team, you have to get your business out of your head." - Meghan

"A client can be so ephemeral, how can you talk about it?" -Meghan

Emotional resistance camps:

  1. afraid to put it out there. It can't fail if it never get's out there in front of people.
  2. perfection mentality. when you're working on your own stuff, you're so close to it.

New team member orientation: elevator pitch, ladders, marketing, etc...

Goal: Everything we build for you, the information will live here.

"If there's order in this part of my life, then I can handle whatever life throws at me." -Meghan

"If I've had a bad day, I'll come home and straighten up. It will put me in a calm." - Meghan

PRO TIPS:

GET SPECIFIC Chunk down to-do list into infinitely small tasks.

There are a lot of repetitive tasks, so to-do lists become an easier task.

Weekly operations task list: What has to happen? break it down smaller, dig deeper into the task and assign it to the day.

When other things come up!

Some people shift their whole day

Some people take the call that comes in and have a space to put schedule that in.

make a list of likes and dislikes to figure out what you maybe can take off your plate.

SOP - Standard operating procedure : maybe you can't do every job, so you write something as a guide for someone. After orienting the new hire you create a system to make sure they are set up for success and then maybe some of those training wheels will be removed at some point once trust is established.

WOTL - Weekly operation task list

Asana - Hub, WOTL, goals

Keep the business running and grow the business

Keep a running list of goals, then refine it down and make formal goals.

Superstitious about planning.

"There are certain things you can't plan! It's really good that we've found each other" - Meghan

Here are the goals, here is a project that will accomplish some of these goals.

For example:

Goals:

monetize Honestly Lisa

more list building

launch the course

strategic marketing plan

Project that will accomplish some or all of those goals:

Launch Course Be Silly Now

KICKING OFF

What is it that we're going to be doing

whats the description

what start date/timeline

what requirements to launch? (in this case, what do we need to clean up?)

Once you've decided to make it a project, you create an area for it.

Technicals, how to do's, detailed specific tasks.

Making relationships with clients. Building a tribe.

"I have all of these things done, they're just out of order." - Lisa

NOW WHAT!>!>! Where do I start?

Deciding deadlines - and starting right away - going straight down the list.

When you notice what things you don't want to do, you figure out who you want to bring on.

WHAT SHOULD I DO THIS WEEK TO HELP ME MOVE FORWARD

Decide when you want to launch.

Looking at the task list, what would you prefer to hire out.

List building campaign: have facebook ad campaign starting on the 10th to collect email addresses/advertise e book

TWO TASKS FOR LISA FOR THE NEXT WEEK

  1. Think about course launch, who you want to have helping with it
  2. Write out your task list for the week, normal to-do list (so we can break it down)

task ideas: brainstorm ideas, decide on an idea

Videos : cataloging, scheduling when and where they go out. What has to happen to them before they go out? intro tags? what copy has to accompany them?

Start to notice what happens weekly. Repeatable tasks.

"Breaking the tasks down will enable you to do the work-that's planning!" - Meghan

Biggest takeaway: Breaking things down to a manageable level.

Lisa Orkin feat. Jennifer Vally

I admit that this episode is ripe with name dropping, and might not be very deep. But it was good to talk to someone who I feel is a contemporary of mine as well as someone who was in the same shoes.

Ye Olde News starring Robbie Rist as Benjamin Franklin

We've known each other at least 20 years. We met at LA Cabaret.

"We were both young mothers who wanted to be comedians." - Lisa

"I had so much more energy when I had little kids to get me up on stage" - Lisa

"If my butt can stick out farther than my belly, I'm good." - Lisa

Trying to find contemporaries. Young brunette mothers. Not a lot of women in the comedy venues. We felt like we were pretty unusual.

"Will you drive me to my gig? I'll let you be my opening act" - Jennifer on how she got her first paid comedy gig.

"You get up when it's dark, don't you?" - Jennifer

Thinking about doing Roast Battle at the Comedy Store

Jennifer was in theatre when she was growing up, moved and did some summer theatre, then moved to LA and did sketches and got into comedy.

"You couldn't get on stage unless you wrote something for yourself" - Jennifer on being a woman in sketch theatre.

"I know what's funny now, it's a science" - Lisa

"I'm not sure I know why people laugh, but I know what will make them laugh." - Lisa

"I speak with my ex too. We have kids!" - Jennifer

We got more done when we had little kids. FYI to the millenials, kids do not change your lifestyle. "I had a cleaner house and I got way more done" - Lisa

Babs - Our dear Babs. A woman in her 40s when we were young comediennes. She had children and she was a comic and writer all along.

Contemporaries: Maria Bamford , Zach Galifianakis, Chelsea Handler, Heather (Chelsea's writer)

"I felt like I couldn't compete because I was a mom" - Lisa

Don't sleep with comics. Even if you're the opposite sex, there's still the competitive vibe.

Going pee outside, trying not to pee on my shoes.

Tree People - bathrooms that are dark because of motion sensor lights.

Being safe in a creepy neighborhood, keep a frying pan in your car.

Can you bury your pets just anywhere?

"Cremate me and sprinkle me at fryman or the shoe department..." - Lisa, after I die.

"I will not shop in stores where I don't believe in their practices." - Jennifer

not macy's too! And bed bath and beyond. "I wanted an instapot, but I guess I'll just get it off amazon" - Lisa

"Amazon prime is like my boyfriend" - Lisa

We went to the women's march!

Marla Maples - more beautiful in person, still!

Favorite signs at the women's march

"Keep abortions safe and legal Trump / ABORT TRUMP"

"Without immigrants, Trump would have no wives"

Hollywood is such a small world, but not even within Hollywood. Weirdest connections.

Pregnant by choice, photoshoot pregnant with an american flag. "The reluctant madonna"

I want to do comedy again, but I don't want to jump through the hoops, I've already done that.

Set List

Auditioning for America's got talent, like they wanted her to have a gimmick. Wanted her to be a grandmother, feeling pigeon holed as a woman in a certain between age stage.

VERBAL RORSCHACH!

Taco - Tuesday

Table - Top

Love - Hate

Beans - Cheese

Sushi - Stinky

Grass - Smoke

Forest - Trees

Horse - Hair

Bucket - Pail

Do you have a bucket list? No.

How long is her bucket list? It makes it sounds like she's dying!

"Well I did that, I'm done now" - Lisa about her grandfather

What's your favorite bush?

Barbara. Of all the bushes, she's better than an Oleander.

It's so hard for me to get organized. I've always been the messy desk girl.

I've hired Meghan Dicklin from Magnetize Projects to help me get my life in order at 54.

This is part one!

"If I can get it together, anyone can get it together" - Lisa

We're going to meet over the course of a few months.

Start with a questionnaire, which Lisa stumbled through - "Forms freak me out!!" - Lisa

Why you're in business? Who you're serving? What you're passionate about? Where do you want to go?

Megan is going to help me with my two businesses. "I'm a bit of a unicorn"-Lisa

"How do we make sure the important things get done" - Meghan

"#squirrelsyndrome - We all fall victim to that" - Meghan

"I'm not going to ignore getting my nut." Lisa

Meghan uses Asana as a business hub. Lisa has used this before but fell off the wagon without proper guidance.

"This all sounds really great and freaks me out a bit" - Lisa

Business growth / standard operational tasks

weekly operations - what needs to happen

what time is left?

how much time do we have left after standard operational tasks to give to growth?

"OMG I have to go do this now!" - Lisa

Hannah Dixon - Digital Nomad

(Links coming soon!)

She's currently in Hanoi, although based out of Bangkok. Sardinia, Sicily, Budapest...

I want to live your life" - Lisa

I think the pros outweigh the cons for sure." - Hannah

The digital nomad community is incredible everywhere. They do meet ups for dinner and drinks and such.

Hannah is a virtual assistant but is now training other virtual assistants.

She's been a VA for three years, and on the road for the last 8 years.

She worked at a husky dog center, a farm in Italy, mostly bars and farms.

"I think we forget how privileged we are when we just want to "get out of here""- Hannah

Why are you moving again? "I don't have a home"- Hannah

Do you get sick? Yes I'm a bit more sensitive to that.

What's the first thing you tell people who want to transition to this lifestyle?

Take your laptop and work on the other side of town all day. If you can do that, then you kind of have an indication already if you can do this thing.

Take smaller trips. Go to a different city in your country for a month.

You have a lot of things you have to change all the time.

You can't be sentimental about stuff anymore.

Hannah is from London, UK, and she'll stop home about once a year in October for her parents and her birthday.

What made you decide to do this?

I guess I was travelling already, I knew this nomadic lifestyle was for me. I never even considered working online, I was a farm girl. Past partner taught her how.

"I know it doesn't just happen-but it does!" - Lisa

Working online, it's so important to have these communities online.

(insert communities)

"It's like another family, and I'm not even on the road" - Lisa

What's the best place you've been to?

Budapest! (she confirms the food is great!)

Low cost of living, and being an introvert, the people aren't going to chat you up a lot. Outdoor baths and autonomy.

Who do you follow? Who do you think is really cool that's doing what you're doing?

Natty and Jodie - the house sitting academy

The had a business in Dubai that went really wrong but they're kind of house sitting extraordinaire so they decided to teach people how! They teach you how to make sure that you're selected for sought after sits. An online community with referrals. They don't pay you and you don't pay them.

"I usually save a bunch of money and plan a two week trip, but I think I want something else now" - Lisa

It's actually very much up to you "You just need your first months rent and a plane ticket" - Hannah

Flight stein - a subscription that finds you the best price flights

Nomad Fly - flight hacking course saving $100s and $100s

Having a boyfriend / dating.

What if you have a partner that's in a stable job? Should you just date nomads?

No real solution, but this lifestyle is becoming more normal, so we're still looking for solutions.

Did it get more addicting as you did it?

Yes, after becoming a digital nomad. You meet people who tell you about amazing places and you "Get a bit of jealousy, I want to go there!" - Hannah

"There's a whole different life out there" - Lisa

You're really chasing WiFi, right?" - Lisa

Nomad list - a resource for checking places out, i.e. is it safe/female friendly/wifi/cost of living

Are there people in their 40's and 50's?

Oh yeah! Way older than that too!

What if I'm seasick the whole time?" Lisa on sailing around the world on a boat.

Co-boat - co working co living sailboat that goes around the world for digital nomads!

One of the big issues with traveling a lot is Visas. Always having to do visa runs. Counting down the days having to rush places.

"I have a year lease on my apartment but I can't be in the country for more than two months at a time. Have to get on a plane and leave." - Hannah

I could have just flown out for a day and back, but it's cheap so I figured I'd visit.

Worst place?

I've been to many places where the other people haven't liked it, but i'm very easy going and I realize " that's the way they do that here"

Sicily- More run down than anywhere and very corrupt system. Getting ripped off all the time. Little Mafia towns. Alcomo?

"Really run down with dead cats on the street, okay I'm good" - Lisa

"I walked up to my hostel, and there's a man shaving a cat on the doorstep. Luckily I gave it a chance" - Hannah

Everything in Vietnam is a mild inconvenience, things just don't work the same.

Airbnb gives refunds if it isn't at all what you expected!

BTBY event in New York, not LA.

"It's the new year, I wanted to put out into the world...this is my plan!" - Lisa

If you're thinking that you can't do it, here's a little sheet that helps pinpoint how you can do this digitally. This is from my course.

"Identify what you're doing in your traditional job and how you can take that online" - Hannah

"There's nothing wrong with keeping a home base." - Hannah

You can rent it out with airbnb while you're not there, and make money, you can also plan around when you need to be home.

How cheap is it? How much are you paying to sleep?

Air bnb is expensive because it's not long term. $180 for the week, which is pricey for the area. $70 is local style, "I opt for the western style toilets and showers"- Hannah

Long term, $350/month in Bangkok, water bill is .40/month. Share it with someone, it has a gym and a pool - and this is the more expensive side. Airbnb is great because it helps you test it out.

Facebook group where people talk about all this stuff.

VA-a personal assistant online, and the scope is even more. (website, answering emails...)

"I don't call anywhere home, which people find really strange." - Hannah

"I don't need a place to call home when I know that the world is mine" - Hannah

What about medical insurance?

"The only issue is in the US. Medical care is cheap or free anywhere else" - Hannah

The only time when she buys insurance is coming to the US. As a dual UK-US citizen she travels with her UK passport and buys travel insurance.

"You're renting a nice place for what I pay in insurance monthly" - Lisa

"Bali is a little bit less gritty, feels more comfortable, and it's still cheap" - Hannah

"I kind of gave you a bad question" - Lisa

Carrie Silver

"health coach and functional nutritionist, working with women and balancing hormones"

It's not just women of women of your age, it's women of all ages.

During all ages of our lives we are going through fluctuations.

Each woman is going through the same fluctuations as their best friend!

"I'm we're all running together, then why doesn't the whole world get it's period?"

In the first phase of the month we are feeling happy, and toward the period (end of the month) we have less energy.

"we just can't throw as many parties!" - carrie on when we have less energy in our cycle.

"I'm putting this in my body and I know my body's not going to be happy" - Lisa on eating traditional glutinous pancakes for her fasting glucose test.

"Hormones are building blocks and we need nutrients to make them work properly." - Carrie

"Change is scary for people, for everyone, for me!" - Carrie

Carrie was always the healthy type, but always felt like crap. Had a lot of anxiety and depression and no libido. Extremely painful periods. Very active and realized when she was super low blood sugar that she needed to figure it out.

She had an inkling and went to see a functional medicine doctor that told her about hormones.

Up until then she thought something was wrong with her. "Let's fix you" This whole weight lifted, and it's not about what was wrong with her, but her body.

"If your body's mechanisms aren't working right you're going to be depressed" -Lisa

"Sometimes it gets hard to figure out what to eat." - Lisa

We definitly have to cut out some things that are causing inflammation, and when we look at the connection between the brain and the body.

"Sometimes its not what you have to cut out, but what you're putting in." - Carrie

We are taught our whole life to go on this deprivation diet. Telling some women to take it out, that's going to cause even more stress. Stress is a huge factor that people don't even take in.  - Carrie

Carrie loves going to the women's health section in the bookstore, and she happened across the orgasmic diet. She had never liked chocolate, and this book encouraged her to incorporate more chocolate.

"incorporating new foods is where to start"- Carrie"

"We are not talking about a Hershey bar here" - Lisa

"there are a lot of nutritious foods that are frickin' yummy"

"I get aroused from sweet potatoes" - Carrie

Sweet potato is good before your period, and its great for building seratonin, which helps with anxiety and mood.

"We're living in such an awesome age" - Carrie

"I use hemp milk, I just want the world to know" - Lisa

I haven't had a period in four months, menopause is signaled by a year of no period. I feel like I'm in a constant state of PMS.

Greens at every meal, what kinds of fats are you having?

Can we talk about the gut? I love talking about the gut.

"There are so many tests out there now to find out what's going on in the gut" - Carrie

Healing food, restoring the intestinal lining. Leaky gut- when particles making it beyond the intestinal wall.

Functional medicine doctors - they look at the root cause of the problem. Little bit of testing and natural medicine, blend of eastern and western medicine.

Once you solve the root cause, then you're solving symptoms.

Not feeling well happens over time and you don't realize you're not your best self.

"One day you're like, This is my life and I don't feel very vibrant" - Lisa

"I 100% believe everyone should the life they fricken want to live." - Carrie

Women say, oh this is just the way it is. About sex, about food, other passions.

When we are looking at anything, there are always multiple cause possibilities" - Carrie

Glennon Doyle Melton's Love Warrior

"How are you supposed to have a good experience in the bedroom if you're stressed out?" - Carrie

"Orgasms have a lot of potential health benefits" - Carrie

Produces oxytocin, which is anti cortisol (stress hormone, one of the women's health epidemics)

"Getting pleasure is such a huge part of the healing process for women." - Carrie

Book rec: Dr. Christiane Northrup Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom

"There are a lot of things in my life that I never really dealt with like I thought I had." -Lisa

I wonder if that's contributing. Did I spend too much time covering up that I don't know how not to be that person.

People think PMS is normal. Severe painful, periods, every month.

"Do you think that's normal? I learned to deal with it" - Carrie

"1/4 of YOUR LIFE that you feel pretty shitty" - Carrie

"25 years of feeling shitty- not okay!" - Lisa

"My mother used to say, 'People do their best work when they're not feeling well'" - Lisa

"It's not just effecting us health wise, how is it causing us in our relationships, in work, being a mother when we are feeling like fucking crap?" - Carrie

You don't have to live like that. Think of how much better life could be when you don't have to live like that.

Are you putting nutritious foods in your body? are you taking probiotics? What is your stress level like?

"Overhauling your life might not be a good situation"- Carrie

"What is MY normal?" - Lisa

Instead of taking things away, what's one good thing you can add?

Foods that help women during PMS:

Bone broth: good for the gut.

There's a bone broth bar in Portland!

Sweet Potatoes and eggs and greens for breakfast - Carrie

Avocado is great for healing the gut too!

What are you incorporating into your diet?

People underestimate the power of short walks.

Do you meditate? Yes. It's my own me time. Having to do it, vs. choosing to do it. Visualization time. It becomes fun.

Be Silly Now - for helping people be in the now, for laughing at themselves.

Finding things to add to your life that make you happier. Not about piling it on.

Finding ways to be present.

Give yourself permission to feel good. I deserve to feel good!
